PROJECT TYPE: K-12 Education Design

PROJECT NAME: Maker Space

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

• Vibrant and playful space that sparks curiosity
• Create teaching moments throughout the space
• Meets the needs of various ages and sizes of children
• Connect indoor and outdoor spaces

Two standard classrooms at this elementary school was transformed into a playful new maker space that sparks curiosity and active learning. While using vibrant colors reminiscent of Lego blocks, the design draws on creating teaching moments throughout the space.

Key elements in the design included removing a load-bearing demising wall to conjoin adjacent rooms and replacing it with exposed structural steel. The existing ceiling was also removed and engineering elements were color-coded to reflect their function.

Additional design features included a playful Tic-Tack-Toe on the ceiling with X and O light fixtures and a centrally located butterfly mascot laser-cut into vinyl sheet flooring. All of the furniture was thoughtfully selected with various ages in mind and maximized flexibility and functionality.

An outdoor teaching area was also added, accessible through an operable glass wall, connecting to a world of possibilities and versatility where students are free to explore their creativity.
